AKT, also known as protein kinase B (PKB), plays a critical role in cell survival and apoptosis. AKT signaling is particularly important for transducing growth-factor mediated signaling, and regulating apoptotic signaling molecules by phosphorylating and inactivating several pro-apoptoptic proteins. Disregulated AKT signaling can result in loss of apoptotic regulation, and so this pathway is a major target of anti-cancer research.
